BMW launched the 2 Series Gran Coupe subcompact sedan for the 2023 model year with the all-wheel-drive 228i xDrive and more powerful M235i xDrive. The front-wheel-drive 228i sDrive was added for 2022, and the lineup is a complete carryover for 2023.The 2 Series Gran Coupe rides on the same front-drive-based architecture as the X1 and X2 crossovers. It competes with other premium small sedans like the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class and Audi A3.For the second year of its second generation, the 2 Series premium subcompact sport coupe mostly stays the course. BMW is preparing for the 2024 M2 that is set to begin production at the end of 2022. For now, you can get the fun-to-drive luxury two-door in two trim levels, each with different power- and drivetrains. If you simply must have a new BMW in your driveway but need to spend as little as possible, the 2023 2-series Gran Coupe has you covered. As the entry-level model in the German automaker’s lineup, the 2-series GC is a small sedan with the difficult task of conveying the brand’s ethos without the benefit of a rear-wheel-drive chassis. Unlike the 2-series coupe and the 3-series sports sedan, the 2-series Gran Coupe rides on a front-wheel-drive platform borrowed from Mini. Handling is playful and a duo of turbocharged four-cylinder powertrains provides perky power, but neither the 228i nor the racier M235i feel as balanced as their stablemates. Sold as a coupe only, the 230i and M240i have vastly different power levels, but are both offered with either rear- or all-wheel-drive. Although it’s grown in size, its rear seat space is smaller than before. There is a more rear-passenger-friendly four-door wearing a 2-series badge: it’s known as the Gran Coupe but it’s built on a completely different front-drive platform that has yet to win us over. The first is the 228i which is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. It sends power to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. BMW also sells the 228i xDrive, which develops the same power and torque figures as the FWD version but sends power to an all-wheel-drive system instead. The hottest variant of the 2 Series Gran Coupe is the sporty M235i xDrive, which features a tuned-up version of the 228i xDrive’s 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4. The higher-performance subcompact sedan makes 301 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. As the numbers suggest, the M235i is quick; 0-60 mph arrived in just 4.7 seconds in our testing.BMW has obfuscated all 2 Series nomenclature by offering two very different model lines under very similar names. For example, even the M235i xDrive Gran Coupe shares part of its name with the now-renamed M235i Coupe, which was a midrange offering that slotted under the full-power M2. Whereas the F22 M235i was powered by a potent and silky turbocharged inline-six engine, the F44 M235i xDrive Gran Coupe instead makes do with a four-cylinder, albeit a gutsy one that sounds very good .The M235i xDrive Gran Coupe can be fun to drive, but its M-tuned suspension and run-flat tires give way to an unrefined ride. It also doesn’t extract the most out of the FWD-based platform, as the X1 and X2 may represent better executions of what constitutes a lower-end BMW. In all, the M235i xDrive is considerably less fun to drive than its two-door stablemate and fails to carve out an identity of its own as a lite M offering. eager to haul the 2 Series Gran Coupe off the line. Despite its FWD-based underpinnings, the F44 turns in eagerly after braking; overall, the car feels light on its feet. It’s a compelling choice for younger buyers who want to start off in a luxury car, and it offers high-tech amenities such as a standard digital gauge cluster and CarPlay-capable BMW iDrive infotainment. The luxury subcompact sedan segment is bristling with stiff competition. Despite the things the 2 Series Gran Coupe gets right, it fails to deliver much of the driving joy as its stablemate, the 2 Series coupe.
