2023 BMW 4 Series – The BMW 4 Series began production in 2014, with BMW always having the same sleek and stylish exterior. His BMW kidney grille is front and center, flanked by modern narrow headlights on both sides, with room for license plates under the grille. Sounds like a pretty good recipe for a good-looking car, right? Well, change them to do. The kidney grille is still there, maybe they’ll double its size for 2023. The proportions are now far out of balance from what they were before.Feel the rush of freedom in the 2023 BMW 4 Series Convertible. But on the outside, the two-door body style and oversize twin-kidney grille give the 4-series a look entirely different from its four-door, 3-series counterpart. Practicality takes a back seat here, literally, as the 4-series’ rear seat is snug; nor is its trunk as spacious as the 3-series’ cargo hold. But if anyone cares, they can opt for the 3-series sedan. The 4-series duo is stylish, quick, and refined as you’d expect BMWs to be. What’s missing, however, is the brand’s traditionally sharp handling, especially if you go with the entry-level 430i model, which comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Opt for the more powerful M440i, which sports a rambunctious turbocharged inline-six, and things get a lot more interesting—but even its backroad moves aren’t as special as we would hope. The 4-series Gran Coupe exists for buyers who want both swoopy styling and four doors, but we review that model separately.BMW’s entry-luxury coupe and convertible are largely unchanged for 2023, but M Sport brakes with red or blue calipers are now a part of the optional Shadowline appearance package. The Premium package no longer includes BMW’s gimmicky gesture controls for the infotainment system, and the optional head-up display is now only available on top-spec M440i models. A Parking Assistance package has been added to the options sheet, and all models now come with a faux-leather dashboard cover. The same two overachieving engines offered in the 3-series are available in the 4-series. Models designated 430i are powered by a 255-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The M440i is powered by a silky-smooth turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that gains an assist from a 48-volt hybrid system to make 382-hp. The 4-series provides a sporty driving experience, courtesy of a retuned suspension, a more-aggressive steering calibration, a wider rear track, and a lower center of gravity than the 3-series sedan. Still, we tested the M440i coupe and came away less impressed with its driving character than its terrific inline-six. Apart from strong brakes that performed well in our 70-to-zero-mph test (149 feet), the Bimmers distant steering and the compliant ride didnt deliver the same satisfaction we got from the M340i sedan. During our test drive of an all-wheel drive 430i xDrive model, we noted decent power from the turbocharged four-cylinder but came away with a similar complaint about the cars too-soft suspension.

The 430i and 430i xDrive models include a 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine. The M440i and M440i xDrive Convertibles have a more powerful 3.0-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder. At the extreme end of the performance is the BMW M4 Competition xDrive Convertible, with an inline-6 delivering 503 horsepower. The EPA estimates the four-cylinder 430i coupe will earn 26 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. Adding all-wheel drive into the equation drops those figures to 24 and 33 mpg, respectively. The six-cylinder M440i is rated at 22 mpg city and 31 highway. We havent tested the M440i model on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, but the 430i xDrive delivered 34 mpg over the 200-mile test. For more information about the 4-seriess fuel economy, visit the EPAs website.Shoppers may not notice much difference between the cabins of the 4-series and the 3-series unless theyre in the back seat. The dashboard layout, interior materials, and primary controls look to be identical to the four-door 3-series, although we noticed that the lower roofline in the 4-series gives it a less spacious feel. Trunk space is less generous here than in the 3-series, especially in the convertible model; in our testing, we fit five carry-on suitcases in the trunk of the coupe model, one less than in the 3-series sedan. The 430i and M440i Convertible models all have up to 13.6 cubic feet of cargo space, plus the standard Storage Compartment Package which adds side pockets, nets for smaller items, and an extra 12V power socket. The 2023 4-series comes with the same standard 8.8-inch and optional 10.3-inch infotainment screens as the 3-series sedan. Both displays run the latest version of BMWs iDrive 7 infotainment software, which pairs an intuitive interface with a console-mounted click wheel controller for easy use while driving; those who prefer to interact with the display directly can do since both are touchscreens. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and in-dash navigation will all be standard while a 12.3-inch digital gauge display, onboard Wi-Fi, and a wireless smartphone charging pad are optional extras. The giant kidney grille looks more like a bucktooth than the front end of a BMW. And on top of that, theres no room for license plates under the grille, so they just put them in the middle of the grille, where it looks completely out of place. Needless to say, Series 4 fans were less than thrilled with the new look.Since series 4 split from series 3 to become a coup series, convertibles, and Gran Coupes themselves, it has gone in a somewhat different style from its four-door counterpart. It looks to continue with the next 4 series coupe, which can be seen here testing at the Nürburgring racetrack in Germany.Although it will share its base with the latest 3 series sedans, this 4 series coupe looks to have different headlights, taillights, and a more rakish profile. There is also a larger 8-series coupe feel in 4-series proportions, as the rear decklid and C pillar maintenance look similar. In an attempt to show BMW that the smaller grille from previous years is the best look for the 4 Series, fans of the brand have used photo editing software to create mock-ups of 2023 models without giant grilles like those found on MotorTrend. And the results really look good.in the US, we expect the 4 series to use the same powertrain range as the 3 series, which means we’ll get the 430i turbo-four and M440i turbo-six models.Manual transmissions have been dropped from America’s 3 series lineup, so we didn’t expect that any of the couplings would have clutch pedals on our shores — but at least the next M3 and M4 are said to offer sticks. All xDrive wheel drive versions and the same Track Handling and M Sport packages offered on the 3 series will definitely be part of the 4-series Stead coupe. In addition to the front grille, the entire car is larger than in previous years, which means that the 2023 BMW 4 Series will probably get the same treatment as many other vehicles – bigger, bigger, bigger. Inside, you’ll find more technology than ever before. The new Series 4 comes standard with an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.Standard safety features include lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear traffic warning, automatic high-beam headlights, forward collision warning, automatic front braking, and pedestrian detection.
