Latest Update: 2024 Tesla Cybertruck Range Extender has announced in December 2023, but will go on sale later.
Last night marked the grand unveiling of the Tesla Cybertruck in its production-ready form. Elon Musk, true to his style, engaged in a lively discourse covering a myriad of topics. However, conspicuously absent from his spiel was any mention of the newly surfaced Range Extender option quietly lurking on the Tesla website. Exclusive to the All-Wheel Drive and Cyberbeast trims (those rocking dual motors), the Range Extender promises an extra 130+ and 120+ miles of range for the respective models, boasting a maximum of 470+ miles for the AWD variant. Yet, this figure falls shy of Musk’s ambitious 2019 proclamation of a 500-mile range when the Cybertruck made its debut.
Drew Baglino, Tesla’s senior vice president of powertrain and energy engineering, shed light on the Range Extender, describing it as a "toolbox-sized battery positioned at the back of the cab in the bed." A glance at Tesla’s provided image of the Range Extender reveals a sizable box nestled against the truck’s cab, raising concerns about its impact on the bed’s practicality.
Elon Musk later took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to delve deeper into the Cybertruck’s Range Extender. According to the Tesla CEO, the additional battery pack "fits in about 1/3 of the truck bed, leaving ample room for cargo." He emphasized that this feature caters to individuals eyeing the Cybertruck for extended journeys or towing hefty loads through mountainous terrain.
However, a hitch arises with Musk’s towing assertion – the Range Extender contributes weight to the Cybertruck, encroaching on its Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and diminishing its maximum towing capacity. The precise weight of the Range Extender remains undisclosed, with Tesla only providing the maximum towing capacity of the Cybertruck sans this option: 11,000 lbs. The actual figure is anticipated to fall somewhere between this upper limit and the 7,500-lbs capacity of the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) Cybertruck.
Notably absent from both Baglino and Musk’s discourse was any mention of the pricing for the Cybertruck’s Range Extender option. However, an astute X user delved into the Tesla website’s code (presumably) and unearthed a potential price tag of $16,000. While unverified, this figure aligns with the substantial cost of electric vehicle batteries.
