Latest Update: 2025 Tesla Cybertruck Dual Motor RWD is said to launch in the same year 2025, with an expected price of $79,990.
After overcoming years of development setbacks and manufacturing challenges, Tesla Inc. has finally rolled out its futuristic Cybertrucks, reminiscent of the iconic Blade Runner aesthetic, to eagerly awaiting customers.
In a grand unveiling, CEO Elon Musk personally delivered a handful of these cutting-edge pickups, including one to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. The event also provided a long-anticipated update on pricing and specifications, revealing that the base model would cost $60,990—a notable increase of over 50% from the initial price estimate four years ago. However, potential buyers will have to exercise patience as the entry-level Cybertruck is not expected to hit the market until 2025.
Tesla is currently accepting reservations for the base model and two additional configurations scheduled for delivery next year, priced at approximately $79,990 and $99,990. Despite the excitement surrounding the Cybertruck, it appears the specifications fell short of earlier promises, with the top-tier version offering a range of around 340 miles on a single charge, in contrast to the initially boasted 500 miles.
Analysts, such as Gene Munster from Deepwater Asset Management, expressed surprise at the higher-than-expected pricing, emphasizing the need for Tesla to ramp up production to bring costs down. Munster noted, "The reality is that the Cybertruck isn’t really out yet."
Tesla’s stock experienced a brief dip, falling up to 2.1% before regular trading on Friday, following the highly anticipated delivery event. The month leading up to the event saw the stock surge by almost 20%, fueled by the anticipation surrounding the Cybertruck’s launch.
The Cybertruck signifies Tesla’s foray into the fiercely competitive US pickup market, generating a mix of anticipation, criticism, and skepticism. Some analysts even recommended canceling the project, citing potential profitability challenges and resource diversion. Musk himself acknowledged the formidable task of producing the Cybertruck, describing it as "insanely difficult."
During the delivery event, Musk focused on highlighting the merits of the Cybertruck, deviating from his usual emphasis on manufacturing challenges. He explained that the distinctive angular shape of the pickup is a result of the stainless-steel body panels that cannot be stamped, as they would break stamping machines.
When Tesla initially opened reservations for the Cybertruck in 2019, it advertised a starting price of $39,900 for a single-motor version with over 500 miles of range for the tri-motor configuration. Notably, the event showcased improved durability, with a demonstration featuring the Cybertruck withstanding a baseball thrown at its front passenger-side window.
Tesla claimed impressive performance figures for the Cybertruck, asserting it can reach 60 miles per hour in just 2.6 seconds. A video presentation showcased the pickup outpacing a Porsche 911 over a quarter-mile while towing another Porsche on a trailer.
The Cybertruck’s towing capacity was also highlighted, boasting the ability to tow up to 11,000 pounds—surpassing the battery-powered Ford F-150 Lightning and certain gas-powered F-150 models. With 17 inches of ground clearance, the Cybertruck surpasses all versions of the F-150 and the electric Rivian R1T pickup.
Additionally, Tesla’s website provides additional details not covered in Musk’s presentation, including the dimensions of the front (18.5-inch) and rear (9.4-inch) touch screens, as well as the inclusion of 15 speakers. The Cybertruck will also feature bidirectional charging, allowing the battery to power homes, tools, and other devices, including other electric vehicles.
