In honor of the 50th anniversary of the M division, BMW has unveiled its exclusive two-seat 3.0 CSL, reviving an iconic nameplate from its infancy.
A team of 30 technicians will produce just 50 units of the 3.0 CSL over the course of three months. The carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) parts will be made by hand. The delivery of each model from the manufacturing line could take up to ten days.
Using the name of an E9-based homologation special from 1972, of which 1265 were produced, BMW claims that the M4-derived 3.0 CSL was developed "with the intention of combining the best of five decades of racing expertise from BMW M GmbH in an automobile with a highly emotional aura."
Naturally, it has rear-wheel drive, a manual transmission, and the straight six-cylinder engine that are hallmarks of the BMW M.
CSL is short for "Coupe, Sport, Leichtbau," which means "lightweight," and BMW has tried to keep its cars light.
The roof, bonnet, boot lid, aprons, sills, and rear wing are just a few of the bodywork sections where CFRP components are utilized.
The titanium rear silencer is approximately 4.3 kg lighter than a steel component, and the roof spoiler is made of plastic reinforced with glass fibers.
The most potent straight-six engine ever used in a road-legal BMW M vehicle is in the 3.0 CSL.
The twin-turbocharged motor is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, with drive going to the rear wheels, and it produces 412 kW of power and 550 NM of torque—up 7 kW from the M4 CSL.
With electronically controlled shock absorbers, the Adaptive M suspension has a front axle with double joints and a rear axle with five links.
Electromechanical M Servotronic steering with a variable ratio and an Active M Differential in the rear are featured in the 3.0 CSL.
It has an M carbon ceramic brake system with six fixed calipers with ceramic discs measuring 400 x 38 mm in the front and single fixed calipers with ceramic discs measuring 380 x 28 mm in the back.
The vehicle’s setup menu lets you choose between two pedal-feel curves, and the traction control can be adjusted to 10 levels, including completely deactivating the stability control in M Dynamic Mode.
BMW claims that the 3.0 CSL has undergone extensive testing, including 200 hours of aerodynamic testing and crash tests on two pre-production models, despite the fact that it is a limited-edition model.
In a nod to the original from the 1970s, BMW has given it a distinct look from the M4, with pronounced wheel arches and a large spoiler in the rear.
Forged, center-locking light-alloy wheels in gold-colored paint are located beneath the wheel arches and measure 20 inches high in the front and 21 inches wide at the rear.
They have Michelin tires with the number 50 emblazoned on the sidewalls that were made just for the 3.0 CSL.
In addition to the yellow Laser Light headlights and a restyled kidney grille with a diamond-patterned insert, the frame is finished in satin aluminum to match the window surrounds.
