Mercedes is steering its course towards an all-electric future by 2030, with a caveat for market conditions. Charting this electric roadmap involves crafting more budget-friendly EVs that will nestle beneath the EQE and EQS models, along with their SUV counterparts. Set to transform from the Concept CLA-Class, the zero-emission sedan is slated for a 2024 debut, and hot on its heels in 2025 comes the electric C-Class.
In its inaugural spy appearance, Mercedes’ response to the BMW i4 was veiled in full camouflage, concealing what appears to be the final production body. However, the provisional headlights and taillights indicate work in progress, and the door handles protruding from the body are likely placeholders. It’s a reasonable deduction that the C-Class EV will adopt flush handles to maintain a sleek profile for optimized range.
Surprisingly, the C-Class EV doesn’t appear substantially larger than the electric CLA prototypes spotted in recent tests. Despite sharing similar aesthetics, the two models are anticipated to ride on distinct platforms—the former on the dedicated EV architecture (MB.EA) and the latter on a platform supporting both electric and combustion engines (MMA).
Even under the cloak of camouflage, the C-Class EV hints at a less voluminous silhouette than its larger siblings, the EQE and EQS. Sporting a sharper design, it might incorporate aerodynamic innovations reminiscent of the Vision EQXX concept car. The lingering question is whether it will feature a conventional trunk lid or a more pragmatic tailgate, aligning with the BMW i4’s design ethos.
As the C-Class EV gears up for market entry, it braces itself for a showdown with a luxury electric sedan from Bavaria. The Neue Klasse platform, making its debut in 2025, will underpin a BMW i3 Sedan (unconfirmed name) and the next-gen iX3, challenging the future EQC crossover.
In the ongoing nomenclature saga, conventional wisdom suggests the electric sedan could assume the EQC moniker, with its high-riding counterpart rebranded as the EQC SUV. However, whispers in the rumor mill suggest Mercedes might bid farewell to the "EQ" branding gradually, commencing in 2024. The inaugural EV with a fresh identity is anticipated to be the electric G-Class, signaling a dynamic shift in Mercedes’ electric nomenclature.
