Prepare to be amazed as Mercedes-Benz unveils its latest creation, the all-new 2024 E-Class Estate. This magnificent vehicle exudes a sportier allure reminiscent of the now-fabled CLS Shooting Brake. While it’s unfortunate that this new-generation E-Class wagon won’t grace Australian roads, its design language and cutting-edge technology are derived from its sedan counterpart, blended seamlessly with a sleek estate rear to enhance its practicality.
Comparing it to its predecessor, the series 214 E-Class Estate has widened by a remarkable 28mm, granting rear passengers a more spacious and comfortable experience. Additionally, the wheelbase has grown to 2961mm, expanding the knee and legroom for those seated in the second row.
The boot space of the E-Class Estate is a true marvel, offering a generous capacity ranging from 615L to 1830L for the mild-hybrid versions. For the plug-in hybrid variants, the quoted range is 460L to 1675L, ensuring ample room for all your luggage and cargo needs.
Moving past the B-pillars, the E-Class Estate inherits the exceptional advancements found in its sedan sibling, showcasing the pinnacle of Mercedes-Benz’s cabin technology. The MBUX Superscreen setup takes center stage, featuring digital instruments ahead of the driver and a remarkable single pane of glass that stretches across a large central touchscreen. For an added touch of luxury, an optional touchscreen is available for the front passenger.
But the technological wonders don’t end there. The E-Class Estate offers the remarkable MBUX Augmented Reality, a feature that superimposes graphics and traffic information onto live images captured by the vehicle’s front-facing camera. And for those who want to stay connected on the go, there’s even an option to equip a selfie and video camera, allowing the driver to join video conferences on platforms like Webex and Zoom while cruising the open road.
Upon its launch in Europe, the E-Class Estate will be available with a range of mild-hybrid and plug-in drivetrains. However, Mercedes-Benz has promised to expand the powertrain options in the future, offering even more versatility and performance.
Under the hood, the E200 Estate boasts a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo petrol engine, delivering an impressive 150kW of power and 320Nm of torque. On the other hand, the E220d is equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, generating 145kW of power and an impressive 440Nm of torque. Both of these power units are enhanced by a 48V mild-hybrid system, providing an additional boost of 17kW and 205Nm.
To ensure compliance with the latest emissions regulations, the diesel engine incorporates various exhaust gas aftertreatment technologies, including a close-coupled NOx storage catalytic converter, a DPF, and two SCR catalytic converters.
The fuel consumption figures for the E200 Estate are rated at 7.6-6.7L/100km on the WLTP cycle, while the E220d achieves an even more impressive 5.7-5.0L/100km. In terms of CO2 emissions, the petrol variant ranges from 173-152g/km, while the diesel variant sits at a lower 149-131g/km.
Looking ahead, Mercedes-Benz has exciting plans to introduce electrified six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines to the E-Class Estate lineup, further bolstering its performance and efficiency.
At launch, the E-Class Estate will also offer the E300e plug-in hybrid variant, combining the power of the E200’s 150kW turbo petrol engine with a robust 95kW electric motor. This pairing results in a system output of 230kW and an impressive 550Nm of torque.
The E300e Estate comes equipped with a substantial 25.4kWh battery pack from Mercedes-Benz’s fourth-generation family of batteries. According to WLTP specifications, this impressive vehicle can travel between 95-113km on a single charge, with a combined power consumption rate of 21.4-19.1kWh/100km.
When it comes to fuel efficiency, the E300e Estate is in a league of its own, boasting a combined fuel consumption rate of just 0.9-0.6L per 100km on the combined cycle. It can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in a swift 6.5 seconds, reaching a top speed of 227km/h.
In terms of charging, the E300e’s battery is compatible with DC fast charging, allowing a rapid 0-100% charge in approximately 30 minutes using the optional 55kW direct current rate. Additionally, it supports 11kW AC charging for added convenience.
Similar to the mild-hybrid range, Mercedes-Benz has exciting plans to introduce more plug-in hybrid versions of the E-Class in the future, featuring a mix of petrol and diesel engines.
While it’s unfortunate that the new E-Class Estate won’t be gracing Australian shores, Mercedes-Benz Australia has confirmed that the eagerly anticipated E-Class Sedan will arrive Down Under during the first quarter of 2024. Although the specific lineup for Australia remains uncertain, the current non-AMG range offers the E200 and E300e Sedan models, as well as the thrilling AMG E53 and E63 variants.
It’s worth noting that Mercedes-Benz Australia has shifted its focus towards SUVs, leading to the discontinuation of the beloved C-Class Estate lineup. Additionally, the CLA and CLS Shooting Brakes have been removed from the Australian market, with the latter being retired globally.
