The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R race car has been unveiled, in preparation for the 2023 Rolex 24 At Daytona. This will be the first time that this car will be seen on the track, which will take place at the next year’s race. The release of this car provides ample time for fans to take a closer look at Chevrolet’s debut FIA-compliant GT3 race car.
It comes as little surprise that the GT3.R shares many similarities with its street-legal counterpart, the Z06. One of the key components shared between the two vehicles is the aluminum frame, which is sourced directly from the Corvette assembly plant. Once obtained, the frame is sent to Pratt Miller Engineering in Michigan for complete transformation into a race-ready vehicle. The process starts with the addition of a roll cage and continues with the installation of race-specific suspension components, dampers, and brakes. However, the double-wishbone suspension layout remains unchanged from that of the production Z06. Additionally, the GT3.R also features the same 18-inch wheels as the C8.R race car.
The Z06 GT3.R boasts a number of aerodynamic enhancements to optimize airflow, cooling, and downforce. These include the incorporation of various ducts, splitters, and a new carbon diffuser. A prominent feature of the car is the large rear wing, which is a new addition to the vehicle. On the other hand, the side intakes are similar to those found on the road-going Z06. The roof and engine cover also share similarities with their street-legal counterparts. However, the hood is borrowed from the pushrod C8.R, similar to the wheels.
The GT3.R is powered by a high-revving 5.5-liter DOHC V8 engine, however, Chevrolet has not yet disclosed the exact power output of the racing version of this engine. It is known that it will be less powerful than the production-spec Z06, as IMSA regulations limit the maximum horsepower to 600, significantly lower than the 668 hp of the street-legal version. Chevrolet has mentioned that the racing version shares over 70 percent of its components with the standard 5.5L engine.
When the Z06 GT3.R debuts on the track in 2024, it will be available for purchase by private teams, who will have access to on-track support from Corvette Racing, including parts and engineering expertise.
