The BMW X5 and X6 are set to make a grand entrance at the Amelia Concours d’Elegance in March of 2024, showcasing their updated and improved features. Despite only minor tweaks to their exterior appearance, both models have undergone significant upgrades in their powertrain and technology. The X5 sDrive40i, xDrive40i, and X6 xDrive40i now boast a new iteration of BMW’s 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, boosted by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The electric motor adds an extra 12 horsepower (9 kW) and 147 pound-feet (199 Nm) to the engine’s output, bringing it to a total of 375 hp (280 kW) and 383 lb-ft (519 Nm). This is a notable improvement from the previous version, which produced 335 hp (250 kW) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm). Production of these two models will commence in April at the automaker’s Spartanburg, South Carolina plant.
According to BMW, the new and improved 2024 X5 and X6 xDrive40i are capable of reaching 60 miles per hour in just 5.2 seconds, a slight improvement from the previous 5.3-second acceleration time. Meanwhile, the X5 and X6 M60i xDrive continue to house a powerful 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, now fortified with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, producing 523 hp (390 kW) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of power. These models are capable of reaching 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds.
The X5 xDrive50e PHEV, the replacement for the xDrive45e, now boasts a total system output of 483 hp (360 kW) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) from its 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six and electric motor, an improvement from the previous 389 hp (290 kW) and 443 lb-ft (600 Nm). Its updated electric motor provides 194 hp (145 kW) and 280 lb-ft (380 Nm) of power, with the ability to temporarily offer 331 lb-ft (449 Nm). This model can reach 60 mph in a mere 4.6 seconds, compared to the previous 5.3 seconds.
Additionally, the BMW X5 xDrive50e PHEV has been fitted with a new battery, boasting a net capacity of 25.7 kilowatt-hours, replacing the previous 17.1 kWh unit. This battery is capable of charging on AC power at a maximum rate of 7.4 kW, allowing for an estimated electric range of 40 miles (64 km).
All three engine options are paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, designed for a smooth and seamless driving experience. The transmission has been upgraded with an electric oil pump and torsion dampers, contributing to smoother gear shifts. For those seeking a more exhilarating drive, the available M Sport package offers a Sprint setting, which automatically shifts into the lowest usable gear, puts the powertrain in its sportiest mode, and provides the full electric boost from the mild-hybrid system.
The updated BMW X5 and X6 have undergone a subtle exterior makeover, with a narrower outline of the headlights and sculpted surfaces now bordering the kidney grilles. The lower fascia has been revised and the X5 is now available with an optional illuminated grille. The X6 comes standard with the M Sport package and features an octagonal shape in the lower fascia. The V8-powered M60i xDrive models boast a powerful presence with quad exhaust pipes.
For those who want to stand out, BMW has added several new colors to the palette, including Blue Ridge Mountain metallic, Brooklyn Grey metallic, Skyscraper Grey metallic, and Frozen Pure Grey metallic. The X5 M60i xDrive can now be had in Marina Bay Blue metallic, while the X6 M60i xDrive offers the eye-catching Isle of Man Green metallic.
The interior of the refreshed X5 and X6 have undergone significant changes, with a new single curved glass display now housing both a 12.3-inch information screen and a 14.9-inch diagonal instrument monitor. An ambient light bar, with 15 selectable colors, has been added to the cabin to enhance the overall ambiance.
