Latest Update: 2024 BMW X8 will be debut in the second half of the year., but will go on sale next year.
Rumors of an X8 originally emerged four years ago, but it wasn’t until about a month ago when BMW chairman Oliver Zipse indirectly confirmed the flagship SUV. "Another high-end car" will be unveiled at the end of the year, and since it will be built at the Spartanburg plant, it must be an SUV as the factory in South Carolina is where the X3 through X6 models come to life, complete with their M versions, plus the X7.
You’ve likely seen the rather worrying spy shots of prototypes by now, and this fresh rendering from Kolesa attempts to digitally remove the camouflage to unveil the controversial design. From split headlights to stacked exhaust tips, the BMW X8 (or is it the XM?) will have a polarizing appearance, perhaps even more of a love/hate affair than the iX. While the X8 is unlikely to get the vertical kidneys of the iX and other recent BMW models, the sheer size of the grille will give the range-topping SUV an ostentatious front fascia. The artist behind this rendering forgot to add the fuel cap, and there should be two of them as rumors suggest the Luxo barge will boast a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Carrying the "Project Rockstar" codename, the X8 / XM is said to become BMW’s most powerful SUV in history by combining the V8 with an electric motor for a total output expected to exceed the 700-hp mark for the hotter Competition version. It goes without saying it will be an xDrive-only affair, although we wouldn’t exclude a Drift Mode for the 0.1 percent of owners eager to hoon the massive, heavyweight SUV. Since the X8 will be labeled as the sportiest X model of the bunch, it might do away with the X7’s third row in a bid to shave off some weight. The sloping roofline does suggest limited headroom in the back, but with BMW being full of surprises these days, it’s difficult to accurately predict what the Bavarians are planning. The fact an SUV positioned above the X7 is in the offing is itself somewhat surprising.
Little else is known about the X8, but Oliver Zipse told CNBC it’s going to be a "brand-new model, high-end for the American market but also for the world market." It’s likely going on sale next year in the US where it will carry a six-figure starting price since the X7 M50i is already almost there. There’s been more chatter around the brand-new model year 2023 BMW X8 after recent spy shots surfaced online. Little is known in terms of pricing and specs, but we do know that the BMW X8 is confirmed as the brand’s new flagship SUV. At the moment, the X7 is the BMW’s biggest SUV, but the X8 is rumored to be the sportiest version of the SUV lineup. Unsubstantiated rumors have suggested that BMW may decide to lose the vehicle’s third row to reduce weight, but there is no confirmation of that at this time.
The appearance has been described as controversial, with stacked quad exhaust and split headlights. The slanted roofline could suggest that there may be less headroom in the back of the vehicle, and based on what we’ve seen from the spy shots, it seems unlikely that the X8 will be getting the vertical kidney grille of other models like the 2022 BMW iX, but it does appear to be quite significant in size and is speculated to be extravagant. Slotting above the three-row X7 in BMW’s SUV lineup will be the performance-oriented XM, a two-row crossover with sporting intentions and tuning by the brand’s vaunted M division. Shown here in concept form, the XM wears an aggressive design with gaping kidney-shaped grille openings, stacked tailpipes, and a slightly sloped roof that hints at a fastback shape. Under the hood is a 644-hp plug-in hybrid powertrain that gets its muscle from a twin-turbocharged V-8. About 30 miles of electric-only driving should be possible with a fully charged battery but it’s the XM’s performance potential that really has our interest piqued. A twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 isn’t new to the BMW powertrain portfolio, but in the XM it’ll be partnered with an electric motor and a battery pack to create a whopping 644 horsepower. BMW says an even more powerful 750-hp variant will join the lineup later. During our initial test drive of a prototype model in Austria, we noted the powertrain’s immediate power delivery and estimated that it should get the XM to 60 mph in about 3.5 seconds. That will put it in the same neighborhood as performance SUVs such as the Lamborghini Urus and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid, both of which delivered zero-to-60-mph times of 3.2 seconds at our testing. The XM uses a coil-spring suspension system that’s augmented by adaptive dampers and active anti-roll bars to provide a surprisingly compliant ride when set to its Comfort driving mode. When set to Sport, the XM’s handling is responsive and eager which makes for good fun on a twisty road.BMW hasn’t said how large the XM’s battery pack is but the company is estimating about 30 miles of electric-only range per charge. When we find out more about the battery, its charging time, and other hybrid details, we’ll update this story with more information.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
While we think the concept’s exterior represents a close estimation of what will eventually roll off the line at BMW’s manufacturing plant in South Carolina, we expect that several of its posh interior details will not make the jump to production. The geometric headliner, for instance, will probably be replaced with fabric or a panoramic sunroof. We love the vintage leather upholstery and the quilted velvet rear seats, but BMW will likely choose more subdued materials for the final product. A large, curved display stretches across the dashboard until it meets up with the passenger’s grab handle that connects to the center console. The display serves as both a digital gauge cluster as well as on-board infotainment, and we can see BMW’s familiar iDrive rotary controller located just right of the shift lever. We’re expecting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to be standard, and additional features such as SiriusXM satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a premium stereo system to be included as well. The BMW X7 M won’t exist because BMW would rather produce the X8 – a halo SUV that was previewed by the XM Concept car. An all-new set of spy shots hasn’t revealed anything new, but considering that this is a completely different prototype than the one we revealed just a few hours ago, it’s pretty clear that BMW wants to get the details ironed out and the production lines rolling. As of now, there’s more secrecy than fact, but a twin-turbo V-8 paired with a plug-in hybrid system should provide some 750 horsepower. As for an official debut, it’s slated to be a 2023 model, so sometime in mid-to-late 2022 sounds about right. Check out the full gallery below to see the new BMW X8 for yourself. The new 2023 BMW X8 – New photos of the upcoming BMW X8 have emerged, with the coupe-styled SUV expected to arrive in 2022.
It will have the same underpinnings as the BMW X8 but offer more aggressive design and performance options, such as the X8M, which will compete against similar models such as The Audi RSQ8 and Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe. Find out all the specs and exclusive photos of this super-performance SUV. The 2023 BMW X8 is expected to be unveiled in the second quarter of 2022, and a public launch is scheduled at the beginning of 2023 year.
If you believe that there wasn’t going to be an SUV with the X8, Don’t be too disappointed. There’s a valid reason why.
It is expected to be among the most giant full-sized SUVs that are efficient about the amount of fuel consumed. While the X6 was comparable to other vehicles in performance, it’s not as spacious as other vehicles with powerful outputs.
There are a few coupe SUVs available today. For instance, the Porsche Cayenne is one such instance. It’s still an SUV of a similar size as the Lamborghini Urus. An extravagant Italian firm also powers it. Rumors of a new BMW crossover positioned above the X7 have persisted for years and now we have evidence that one is coming.
A prototype for the new flagship crossover has been spotted, and it reveals that designers have adopted the lower and flatter roof of the X2 for the vehicle, as opposed to the high roof of the X5 and X7, or the coupe-like roof of the X4 and X6. Such a roof design results in a dynamic look while maintaining headroom for rear-seat passengers, which is an important factor in the Chinese market where a large number of crossovers will end up. Don’t be surprised if there’s also an option of two executive-style seats in the rear instead of the standard three-seat bench, once again to cater to the Chinese market.
The name X8 is likely attached to the upcoming crossover given the discovery of a trademark filing for "X8". An X8 M version is also coming and is expected to pack an electrified V-8 delivering close to 750 hp. There are rumors that the X8 M version will be the sole model on offer, possibly badged an X M, which would make the crossover a standalone model for the M division, though we’ll have to wait and see, We can see that the prototype in our spy shots is a hybrid, specifically a plug-in hybrid as evidenced by a cover for a charging port on the driver’s side front fender. For any base model, the powertrain is likely to be a version of the 3.0-liter inline-6 and single electric motor setup that features the 7-Series’ 745e variant. It’s good for 389 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque.
Underpinning the vehicle is the same high-riding version of BMW’s CLAR modular platform found in the X7. The two crossovers are also likely to share styling cues, as prototypes for an updated X7 (shown below) with similar styling to this X8 have been spotted. Both look to feature low-set headlights, a design destined for a redesigned 7-Series due about the same time as the X8 and updated X7. We should see all three BMW flagships arrive around 2022, meaning they’ll likely arrive as 2023 models. The X8 will compete with mid- to full-size luxury crossovers like the Audi Q8 and Land Rover’s Range Rover and Range Rover Sports duo.
