Diving into the realm of auto innovation, Toyota is gearing up to make some noise at the upcoming 2023 SEMA Show with their dazzling 2024 Tacoma X-Runner Concept. Echoing the spirit of the early 2000s street trucks, this revival showcases an audacious fusion of power and style that aims to captivate the contemporary market.
While Toyota’s existing lineup boasts robust off-road contenders like the Trailhunter and TRD Pro trims, the brains behind the R&D and design teams opted to take an exhilarating detour this time. Their motive? To test the waters and discern whether the appetite for sporty pickups still lingers amidst today’s dominance of tough, towering, and lifted machines. Adam Rabinowitz, chief designer at Toyota’s Calty Design Research, underscored this experimental spirit, noting, "There were lots of street trucks in the early 2000s and they all faded, so on the one hand, this was a curiosity check to see if there is any market for street trucks at all, or if the market has entirely shifted to what we see today—tough, rugged, lifted vehicles."
Exhibiting an assertive stance, the X-Runner Concept flaunts a widened track, amplified by 3.0 inches, coupled with an air suspension system cherry-picked from the Tundra family. This setup allows the truck to gracefully squat over its resplendent 21-inch carbon-fiber wheels, backed by a robust set of 2.5-inch Bilstein shocks flaunting remote reservoirs.
But it’s under the hood where the X-Runner Concept truly roars to life, fueled by a twin-turbo 3.4-liter V6 engine, propelling a jaw-dropping 421 horsepower and a whopping 479 lb-ft of torque. A far cry from the stock Tacoma’s capabilities, which cap out at 326 hp and 465 lb-ft with the hybrid-assisted turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder. Ensuring this powerhouse remains in check, Toyota has seamlessly integrated the rear axle from a Tundra, complete with an electronic-locking differential.
In the aesthetics department, the X-Runner Concept is a sight to behold, draped predominantly in the mesmerizing Speedway Blue hue. Its countenance is marked by a trapezoidal front fascia featuring generous openings and a striking light bar at its heart. Adding an extra oomph, the satin black hood boasts a functional scoop adorned with striking red accents, while a bold rectangular side-exit exhaust peeks out provocatively ahead of the driver’s side rear wheel. The bed is elegantly concealed by a hard tonneau cover, and the rear end is embellished with smoked taillight lenses and a bumper incorporating a simulated diffuser.
Stepping inside, one is greeted by a vibrant duo of red seats proudly emblazoned with the X-Runner emblem adorning the headrests. Not to be outdone, the steering wheel comes equipped with paddle shifters, accentuating the vehicle’s sporty appeal.
The 2024 Tacoma X-Runner Concept pays homage to its predecessor, the original X-Runner, which graced the roads from 2005 to 2014. With a lowered suspension, a sporty body kit, and a hood scoop, it brought the thrill of a street truck straight from the factory floor. The earlier model was powered by a 4.0-liter V6 engine, churning out 236 hp, mated to a six-speed manual transmission that catered to the rear wheels, all enhanced by a standard limited-slip differential. For those craving an extra adrenaline rush, TRD had even offered a supercharger as a dealer add-on, boosting the engine’s output to a staggering 300 hp.
