In the ever-evolving landscape of the automotive world, Skoda’s flagship model, the Superb, has long been admired for its elegance and functionality. Yet, enthusiasts have yearned for a more spirited version, and it seems that the winds of change may finally be blowing in their favor with the advent of the 2024 Skoda Superb.
Breaking away from tradition, Skoda introduced the latest iteration of the Superb in November of this year, showcasing its versatility in Combi and Liftback/Hatchback body styles. The lineup boasts an array of powertrain options, including gasoline, mild-hybrid, diesel, and PHEV variants. While the spotlight shone on the luxurious Laurin & Klement trim, the absence of a sportier alternative did not go unnoticed.
Amid speculation about the potential introduction of an RS/vRS version to challenge the likes of premium brands such as Audi, BMW, and Mercedes, Skoda’s CEO, Klaus Zellmer, offered a tantalizing response. Though stopping short of a concrete confirmation, Zellmer acknowledged the validity of the arguments for a sportier Superb, stating, "I couldn’t agree more. Let’s see. We have not announced anything, but I think your arguments are valid."
Interestingly, Zellmer emphasized that, in his view, raw power output takes a back seat. Top speed and acceleration figures, often considered benchmarks of performance, are not deemed paramount to Skoda’s customer base. Instead, he underscored the importance of factors such as efficiency, sustainability in car materials, and the overarching goal of decarbonization throughout the entire value chain. This perspective hints at a potential paradigm shift where a Superb RS could prioritize efficiency over sheer performance.
Presently, a PHEV powertrain is exclusive to the Superb Combi, delivering a combined output of 201 horsepower from a 1.5 TSI engine and a single electric motor. However, a more potent iteration of the plug-in hybrid system, generating 268 horsepower, exists in the closely related VW Passat Variant. This configuration seems tailor-made for an electrified Skoda Superb iV RS, offering a harmonious blend of performance and a noteworthy zero-emission range of 100 km (62 miles) thanks to its 25.7 kWh lithium-ion battery.
The prospect of a Superb RS doesn’t merely end with powertrain enhancements. Skoda engineers might fine-tune the adaptive suspension, electronic steering, and brakes, aiming to elevate the driving dynamics of their flagship model. As the automotive world embraces a new era marked by efficiency and sustainability, the Skoda Superb RS could emerge as a trailblazer in redefining the expectations of performance-oriented vehicles.
