If you’ve been keeping an eye on the road prowler that is the third-gen Nissan Murano (perhaps it’s time to explore new hobbies?), you’d be aware that it has been cruising the streets for a solid seven years. While not breaking any records for longevity, it’s high time for a substantial makeover in one of the automotive industry’s second-most cutthroat segments. Midsize SUVs play a pivotal role in defining a brand’s portfolio, and the Murano is set to bask in the glory of a well-deserved update come the 2025 model year. But before the grand unveiling, our pal Harry managed to catch a glimpse of the Murano’s rear in Phoenix, Arizona.
Even though the details are scarce, we can confidently affirm that this is the 2025 Nissan Murano, deduced from the distinctive roofline, rear fascia, and the slender taillight design, as gleaned from spy shots circulating in recent months. What adds a dash of intrigue to the mix is what Nissan seems to be using as its benchmark. Sharing the stage with the Murano is none other than the current (soon-to-be former) Ford Edge, a direct competitor in the midsize, two-row SUV arena, sandwiched between the smaller compact counterparts (the Rogue/Escape, respectively) and the larger, three-row midsize SUVs (the Pathfinder/Explorer). The Murano also faces off against rivals like the Chevrolet Blazer, Volkswagen Atlas, and Jeep Grand Cherokee, among others.
On the power front, Nissan and Ford are taking divergent paths in this class. The showcased Edge Titanium flaunts a 2.0-liter, twin-scroll turbocharged four-cylinder engine, churning out 245 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. If the Murano sticks to its current powertrain lineage (similar to the new Pathfinder), the fourth-gen model might embrace a 3.5-liter V6 with an output ranging from 284 to 295 horsepower and approximately 259 lb-ft of torque.
A sneak peek at the rear end already reveals Nissan’s penchant for a sleeker, Ariya-inspired aesthetic rather than the truck-like vibe brought to the table by the Pathfinder.
To distinguish itself from the Pathfinder and potentially prolong its lifespan before the inevitable electric shift, Nissan could opt for a hybrid route. Although the brand does offer hybrid models in some overseas markets, there’s little indication of an imminent hybridized Murano, at least not through official channels or the rumor mill.
While the exact benchmarks remain shrouded in mystery (performance, vibration, harshness, etc.), the sighting of the new Murano out in the wild implies that the official reveal is drawing near. Expect more revelations in the coming months, shedding light on Nissan’s game plan.
