Latest Update: 2024 Nissan Leaf Shiro launched in June 2023, with a price tag of $30,000.
few can boast a legacy as enduring as the Nissan Leaf. Introduced a staggering 13 years ago, the Leaf has remained a steadfast contender in the market. Now, in its second generation since 2018, Nissan has deemed it time to bestow upon the Leaf a fresh coat of paint and a sprinkling of delightful surprises. And indeed, that is precisely what they have done.
Allow us to introduce the Nissan Leaf Shiro, a former Nissan Leaf N-Connecta now equipped with the esteemed ProPILOT Assist as standard. This remarkable package offers an array of cutting-edge features, including lane keeping, traffic jam assistance, and an automatic parking brake. The seats, enveloped in luxurious synthetic leather with fabric inserts, exude both comfort and style. As an added treat, there is even an option for a Spare Wheel Pack - an elegant name for a steel spare wheel accompanied by a set of tools for seamless replacement.
Regrettably, the new model exclusively offers the smaller 39 kWh battery pack. While this limits its range, it still achieves a respectable WLTP rating of 270 km and an EPA rating of 243 km. Powering the front wheels is an impressive 110 kW (150 hp) electric motor that effortlessly propels the Leaf Shiro. In fact, the vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 7.9 seconds, a feat that would have placed it in the esteemed territory of hot-hatches a decade ago. Alas, the Leaf Shiro’s top speed is 143 km/h, and its 50 kW DC charging capability may necessitate an occasional 40-minute pit stop every 200 km on lengthier journeys—an inconvenience to be noted for those considering it as a family car.
Truth be told, the Nissan Leaf is showing signs of aging. Once a trailblazing EV 13 years ago, it settled into a more modest position five years back, and its continued presence in the market owes, in part, to the limited choices available within its price range. Speaking of price, the Leaf Shiro is retailed at €32,782, a noteworthy €2,300 less than its Leaf N-Connecta counterpart equipped with the same battery.
The name "Shiro" derives from the Japanese word for "white," which fittingly reflects the available color options for the Nissan Leaf Shiro. While the shade of Arctic White holds its allure, those seeking a touch of individuality can opt for the two-tone finish, which swaps the body’s hue for the resplendent Storm White while donning a Pearl Black roof.
Despite its advancing years, the Nissan Leaf has managed to captivate the hearts of consumers worldwide. With over 646,000 units sold since its inception, this remarkable vehicle remains a popular choice. Continually earning accolades for both new and pre-owned electric cars, the Leaf perseveres, deftly blending tried-and-true technology with enticing new enhancements, all while Nissan ponders its next move in the ever-evolving automotive landscape.
