The BMW iX5 Hydrogen crossover has started production. The new model is being built by the automaker at its Munich Research and Innovation Center. Starting next spring, the cars will be used as technology demonstrations in some markets.
The company’s research center employs approximately 900 people, and employees can simultaneously work on up to six vehicle projects. In order to ensure that both the product and the manufacturing procedure are prepared for full production, BMW builds each model here for the first time.
Frank Weber, a member of BMW’s board of management who is in charge of development, stated, "Hydrogen is a versatile energy source that has a key role to play as we progress towards climate neutrality."Due to the company’s belief that a mix of battery-electric and fuel-cell electric vehicles is required, the company will utilize its iX5 Hydrogen test fleet to learn more about the technology.Weber said that FCEVs don’t need the important raw materials for making batteries like cobalt, lithium, or nickel.
The iX5 is made in the US at the company’s Spartanburg factory. The crossover gets a new floor in Germany that can hold two hydrogen tanks that are under the rear seat and in the central tunnel.During the assembly phase, BMW places the high-performance battery, fuel cells, electric motor, 12-volt and 400-volt electric systems.
BMW isn’t the only company working with hydrogen. This week, Honda announced that it will introduce a hydrogen fuel cell plug-in electric vehicle in 2024.It will be based on the well-liked crossover CR-V, which underwent a substantial redesign for the 2023 model year.Similar to BMW, Honda is making special care of the low-volume production of the model by building it in its Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio, where it also makes race cars, the Acura NSX, and the Acura PMC Edition.
The fact that the future is uncertain is the only thing we know about it.With electric vehicles, automakers face new uncertainties, and the absence of a robust charging infrastructure is not helping.Hydrogen, on the other hand, has similar limitations, but BMW, Hyundai, and others have continued to investigate the technology’s viability.
