Luxury carmaker Genesis is taking another step toward electrification with a third EV model, the 2023 Electrified GV70, which is coming to join the GV60 SUV and the Electrified G80 sedan. Based on the gasoline-powered GV70 SUV, the Electrified GV70 looks just as fabulous but swaps in two electric motors making a combined 483 horsepower. All-wheel drive is standard, and Genesis says the Electrified GV70 will come with a fast-charging system that will allow the battery to be juiced from 10 percent to 80 percent in under 20 minutes. The Electrified GV70 will be a new nameplate for the Genesis lineup, and we expect it to launch as a 2023 model with sales starting sometime in late 2022.The state-of-the-art infotainment system and the new connected car technology provide the optimal use environment thanks to innovative technologies such as Fingerprint Authentication System paired with Genesis CarPay, radar sensor-based advanced rear seat passenger alert, and independently controlled full auto air conditioner that only operates in the driver’s seat to prevent unnecessary power consumption in case the driver is the only one aboard. The high-capacity battery creates synergies with regenerative braking to provide a satisfying driving range. The Road Active Noise Control (ANC-R) technology that reduces roadway noise and the Boost Mode that immediately increases the performance of the vehicle’s maximum output complete the dynamic yet pleasant driving emotion that only a luxury electric SUV can offer.Oh, and it has 483 hp and super-quick charging capability.Last week Genesis unveiled the 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 at Auto Guangzhou 2021. It is the third EV in the Korean luxury brand lineup, including the Electrified G80, and will slot above the smaller GV60.
All-wheel drive will be standard on the Electrified GV70, and it will use two motors, one on each axle, to achieve that. Maximum horsepower is a claimed 483 horsepower. Genesis says the Electrified GV70 will be capable of hitting 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, which would make it the fastest version of the compact SUV. We tested the regular 2022 GV70 with the optional twin-turbocharged V-6 and made it to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. When we get a chance to test the Electrified GV70, we’ll update this story with driving impressions and test results.Genesis hasn’t yet released information about the Electrified GV70’s battery pack or driving range—although we’re expecting about 300 miles per charge—but it has announced that the SUV will get a very fast onboard charger. The system is capable of charging at 350 kW, and Genesis says that’s quick enough to get the battery from 10 to 80 percent charged in less than 20 minutes at a public charging station. The Electrified GV70 shares its interior with its gasoline-powered counterpart, which means it will have a similarly impressive design and upscale ambiance. Interior space is appropriate for the compact-SUV class, and we expect cargo space to be unchanged from the gas model, although Genesis has not released specifications or photos of the Electrified GV70’s trunk. In terms of design, the differences between the electric GV70 and its fuel-based counterpart are subtle. Out front, the regular GV70’s grille opening is closed and integrates a concealed EV charging port. Upon closer observation, you will also notice the functional side air vents and updated lower radiator grille, which improves aerodynamics. Genesis streamlined the rear end by removing the gas model’s exhaust outlets and diffuser. The model shown wears a coat of Atacama Copper Matte exterior paint. The Electrified GV70 is only available in dual-motor, all-wheel-drive configuration. Each motor—one is mounted at the front axle and another at the rear—develops about 215 hp and 257 lb-ft of torque. Together, the electric motors produce a combined output of 483 hp and 516 lb-ft. Genesis claims the massive jump in power will launch the luxury crossover from 0 to 62 mph in a mere 4.5 seconds. This model is the first to come equipped with e-Terrain mode, an SUV-specific feature for driving on rugged surfaces. When the goal is to drive conservatively to preserve range, the Disconnector Actuator System (DAS) will automatically disconnect the motor and driveshaft. Depending on driving conditions such as vehicle speed and driving mode, the system seamlessly switches from using single or dual motors, helping reduce unnecessary power loss and boost efficiency. Furthermore, the Electrified GV70 gets Smart Regenerative Braking System 2.0 and ANC-R (Active Noise Control-Road). While Genesis did not disclose the battery size, the Electrified GV70 delivers approximately 249 miles of range based on the Korean EV certification system. Able to handle up to a 350-kW charge rate, the 400/800-volt rapid charging setup allows the battery to charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in as little as 18 minutes. Additionally, the Electrified GV70 has a vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability that enables it to generate 3.6 kW of output, which can power the home or appliances if need be. The 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 is another example of the electrification of future Genesis models and shows the automaker’s commitment to growing its EV lineup.
A large widescreen infotainment display stands proud on the dash and will run the latest version of Genesis’s software interface. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot will all likely be offered as standard; we also expect to see a Lexicon stereo system on the options sheet.Luxury carmaker Genesis is taking another step toward electrification with a third EV model, the 2023 Electrified GV70, which is coming to join the GV60 EV SUV and the Electrified G80 sedan.
