The five-passenger sedan measures 194 inches long — 1.9 inches shorter than the Avalon, which just went out of production. It’s fractionally narrower than the Avalon, but its 60.6-inch-high roof makes the Crown a whopping 4.1 inches taller than the Avalon. The Crown’s 112.2-inch wheelbase, a key dimension that affects passenger space and handling, is 0.8-inch shorter than the Avalon. Lower trim levels — XLE and Limited — will have a 2.5L engine and hybrid system with a continuously variable automatic transmission. Toyota’s not revealing that drivetrain’s power but predicts it will get a 38 mpg rating in combined city and highway driving.

The top Platinum trim gets a more powerful system that Toyota calls Hybrid Max. It generates 340 horsepower and has a 2.4L engine, six-speed automatic transmission, and electrically powered rear axle. Toyota predicts it will get 38 mpg in combined city and highway driving. Powertrains: 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid with continuously variable automatic transmission (XLE, Limited) or 323-system-horsepower, turbocharged 2.4-liter hybrid with six-speed automatic (Platinum); the 2023 model year as a high-riding full-size sedan with standard all-wheel drive and a choice of two hybrid powertrains, including a performance-oriented Hybrid Max option for the range-topping Platinum that will produce a Toyota-estimated 340 net horsepower.

Available in XLE, Limited, and Platinum trims, the Crown will be the new top dog in Toyota’s sedan lineup after the Avalon exits the brand’s lineup for 2024. The Crown is 4.1 inches taller than the outgoing Avalon but slightly smaller in terms of length and width with a wheelbase that’s just under an inch shorter. Toyota hasn’t yet announced pricing, but this new Crown is very different from previous versions or the soon-to-depart Avalon. While a sedan with a fastback design, it may also be called a crossover for its higher ground clearance, four inches more than the Camry.

It is resultingly tall: The Crown’s overall height is 60.6 inches to the Camry’s 56.9, but it’s still shy of full crossover height: the Toyota Venza is considerably taller at 65.9 inches. Although we won’t see them here, Toyota has introduced three other versions of the Crown for Japan, a conventional sedan without the lift, a compact crossover and a full-on SUV called the Crown Estate. This fall, however, a hybrid-only Crown will return stateside as Toyota’s most luxurious model It’ll also be the first to get the automaker’s performance-oriented Hybrid Max engine.
