Latest Update: 2024 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Cargo Van will be announced in the second half of 2023, but will go on sale next year.
The wait is over, folks! The electrifying eSprinter van, first introduced by Mercedes five years ago, is finally making its way to North America to take on the Ford E-Transit. This production-ready model boasts a fresh look, having been designed on a new "Electric Versatility Platform," following a massive €350-million investment. Get ready to see this green machine in action in the latter half of 2023.
The highly anticipated second-gen eSprinter is set to hit the Canadian market in the second half of 2023, bringing with it an electrifying presence. Powering the van is an electric motor mounted at the back, available in two configurations - 134 horsepower (100 kW) and a stronger 201 hp (150 kW). With a weight of 286 lbs (130 kg), the e-motor generates a powerful torque of 295 lb-ft (400 Nm).
For North American consumers, Mercedes is offering the eSprinter with the largest battery option, featuring LFP cell chemistry with a usable capacity of 113 kWh and an active thermal management system, devoid of cobalt and nickel. Although the range for the US-spec model has not been disclosed yet, the European version is capable of reaching 248.5 miles (400 km) on a single charge, as per the WLTP standards.
The eSprinter’s battery, per WLTP city cycle, boasts an impressive range of 311 miles (500 km) and the US-specific range figures are yet to be revealed by Mercedes. The automaker conducted a range test in Germany in October 2022 with a near-production prototype, which achieved a remarkable 295 miles (475 km) on a single charge with an additional 12 miles (20 km) remaining at the end of the run.
Recharging the depleted battery can be done quickly and efficiently through either the fast charging option with a maximum power of 115 kW, taking just 42 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 percent, or the onboard charger with a maximum output of 9.6 kW. These details, along with the launch in the US and Canada in H2 2023, make the eSprinter a highly anticipated electric van.
The eSprinter’s interior, while familiar, houses the innovative MBUX infotainment system for the first time in a commercial vehicle. This new feature allows the driver to estimate real-time range based on traffic and topography, and even reach their destination with a preferred battery level when the navigation is activated.
This electric van boasts a spacious load capacity of 488 cubic feet (13,818 liters) and a permissible gross vehicle weight of 4.25 tons (9,369 lbs). The eSprinter will be manufactured at plants in Düsseldorf, Germany, Charleston, South Carolina, and Ludwigsfelde, Germany and be available for purchase in approximately 60 markets, with Europe following North America in late 2023.
