The 2023 Q8 is a very good luxury SUV. The Q8 sports a spacious and well-trimmed cabin with comfy seating for five, a sizable cargo area, and many standard safety and convenience features. It’s quiet and relaxing to drive, yet it can hustle along winding roads with admirable composure. There’s no shortage of power either. Engine choices range from a potent V6 to a pair of hard-hitting V8s.
Still, the Q8 does have its drawbacks. It’s pricey for a luxury midsize SUV, and it fair to poor fuel economy doesn’t do it any favors in that respect. Also, its dual-screen infotainment system, while sleek-looking, can be distracting to operate.
Should I Buy the 2023 Audi Q8?
The Q8 is well worth considering if you’re shopping for a luxury midsize SUV, but we’d suggest giving other options a look first. The Mercedes-Benz GLE, Genesis GV80, and BMW X5 are similarly luxurious, but each offers better everyday practicality at a more affordable price. You might also consider the three-row Audi Q7, which trades a bit of style for family-friendly seating. The Q8 is an all-around solid luxury SUV, but it comes with some drawbacks to consider. It can’t seat as many people as the Q7, and the infotainment system can be difficult for some to use. Limited outward visibility and subpar fuel economy are other downsides we experienced during testing. If you’re interested in the Q8’s rivals, it competes against the highly ranked Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, the Porsche Cayenne Coupe, and the new kid on the block, the Genesis GV80.

If you’re looking for a Q8 with even sportier intentions, there’s either the V8-powered Audi SQ8 or RS Q8. The Q8 is a strong competitor among midsize luxury SUVs, but some compromises in practicality keep it from the top of the class.
Changes to the Q8 were minor for the 2022 model year. It got larger 21-inch wheels for the base model and added features on the higher trims. But there could be greater changes in store for 2023. A few reports say a cosmetic refresh could be coming, along with upgraded driver assistance and infotainment systems, though there’s been no official confirmation from Audi. Finally, a German publication reported that the Audi e-Tron, the automaker’s first electric SUV, will be rebranded as the Q8 e-Tron to make the naming less complicated.
The 2023 Audi Q8 receives a variety of trim and feature upgrades. Animated matrix-design LED headlights and leatherette dashboard wrapping are now standard. The available Convenience Package gains adaptive cruise control, and the Executive Package adds side acoustic glass. The top-shelf Prestige trim gets an automated parking system, while the high-performance RS variant adopts power rear sunshades and an extended Nappa leather interior.

The regular Q8 is powered by a turbocharged six-cylinder engine. The SQ8 receives a twin-turbo V8, and the RS Q8 runs with a high-output version of the V8 for track-worthy performance.

The Q8 is a midsize, two-row crossover with ample room for five. The cargo space behind the rear seat measures 30.5 cubic feet. With the seats folded, the Q8 offers 60.7 cubic feet of space. These figures are more appropriate for a compact crossover, as the Q8 prioritizes passenger comfort and performance over utility.
CONNECTIVITY
The standard infotainment system for the Q8 features a 10.1-inch touchscreen, 10 speakers, 4 USB ports, navigation, HD and satellite radio, wireless Apple CarPlay, and wired Android Auto. Wireless device charging is part of the Premium’s Convenience Package. It’s standard on the Premium Plus and Prestige, which also get a 17-speaker Bang & Olufsen system.We all know someone a little cooler, and in the case of the three-row Audi Q7 SUV, it’s the Q8—the more stylish two-row fraternal twin that shares the same underpinnings. The Q8’s proportions are wider, shorter, and lower but the dramatic design sacrifices back-seat headroom, passenger capacity, and cargo area to the Q7 as the Q8 is only offered as a five-seater with two rows. Power comes from a turbocharged 335-hp V-6 engine with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, the same powertrain as in the Q7’s upper trim levels. The 500-hp SQ8 and even crazier 591-hp RS Q8 are reviewed separately. The joy experienced while driving the Q8 is a benefit of sharing platforms with the Bentley Bentayga and Porsche Cayenne SUVs. The Q8’s chassis balances crisp, reassuring handling with a supple ride. Even if it’s not as athletic as other "SUV coupes" like the BMW X6 or Mercedes-Benz GLE coupe, it’s still enjoyable to drive—and certainly less strange looking. The 2023 Audi Q8 receives additional standard equipment such as matrix LED headlights, and headlight washers, as well as illumination animation on approach or departure—meaning the exterior lighting elements, do a happy dance for you. The Q8 Premium’s Convenience package now includes adaptive cruise control with lane-keep assist. The Executive package for Q8 Premium Plus adds dual pane glass to help quiet the cabin. New interior packages add leatherette to the dashboard for Premium models, as well as to the armrests and center console to the Premium Plus trim. While 21-inch rims are standard, we’d still spec the Black Optic package for its sportier appearance. We’d also add the Convenience package (blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, wireless charging, and more) and the Towing package. The latter unlocks the Q8’s maximum tow rating of 7700 pounds. Audi provides every Q8 with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that makes 335 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. It pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive. A 48-volt hybrid-assist system aids stop-start operation, which was smooth and quiet during our experience. While the Audi had plenty of passing power on the highway, it felt hesitant around town unless we crushed the gas pedal. The transmission had mostly dutiful reactions, but it and the engine best cooperated in Dynamic mode, which provoked snappier responses. We only wish the engine and exhaust made gutsier sounds. While it swiftly changes directions and obediently hustles around corners, it’s less engaging than Audi sedans, such as the sleek A7. The Q8’s steering has light effort and linear feedback, which was relaxing on long trips but boring on switchback roads. Our test vehicle had the optional air suspension and wore 22-inch wheels—21-inches are standard. These large rollers were mostly quiet even on lumpy surfaces. With adjustable ride height and four-wheel steering (included with the Adaptive Chassis package), our Q8 was agile in tight spaces and capable of tackling choppy terrain. Its brake pedal was easy to modulate at highway speed but suffered from inconsistent reactions in traffic. Still, it hauled the hefty crossover from 70 mph to zero in a competitive 170 feet during our emergency-braking test.
